Clover Moore
Lord Mayor

Welcome from Lord Mayor Clover Moore

I’m delighted to welcome Walk21 to Sydney, the perfect location for the world’s leading walking conference.

Sydney is a global city made for walking. In our city centre more than 90 per cent of trips are made on foot.

Our beautiful harbour, our famous bridge and Opera House and our great climate all encourage Sydneysiders and visitors to get out in the fresh air and walk, whether they're working, relaxing, shopping or exploring.

The City of Sydney is encouraging people to walk by improving safety and making our streets more appealing for pedestrians.

Each year the City invests millions of dollars to further develop our green network of streets and paths, connecting our villages and the city centre. This network makes it easier for people to walk to major transport and entertainment hubs, cultural precincts and our hundreds of parks and open spaces.

In recent months the City has:

  • Completed a $10 million upgrade of inner-city walkways, improving access as part of a program to make inner Sydney more liveable and pedestrian-friendly;
  • Installed new pram and wheelchair ramps in footpaths at intersections; and
  • Planted thousands more trees and shrubs and built garden beds and rain gardens, all providing more attractive, shaded walking routes – our aim is to increase our tree canopy by 50 per cent over the next 16 years.

A new strategy will make it easier for pedestrians to get around by providing interactive street signs, maps, information boards and apps to encourage people to confidently explore everything Sydney has to offer.

We are upgrading 57 inner-city laneways with new paving and lighting, improved traffic management and more art installations to form a network of small plazas where shops, bars and other small businesses can thrive.

And we’re making walking routes more attractive and interesting with new public artwork.

Walk21

Walk21 exists to champion the development of healthy, sustainable and efficient communities where people choose to walk. Through the Walk21 Conference series and the Walk21 International Charter, Walk21 have a vision to create an environment where people choose and are able to walk as a way to travel, to be healthy and to relax.

The Walk21 Conference brings together experts in the field of walking promotion, research, policy, planning and delivery. It is an opportunity to learn from international experience and to showcase local challenges and solutions.

Walk 21 Director Jim Walker explained that "It is the third time that Walk21 will be hosted in Australia during the 15 years of the global walking movement.   2014 promises to be both an opportunity to catch up on the impact of previous conferences in Perth (2000) and Melbourne (2006) as well as an opportunity to understand how visionary politicians are proving capable of juggling advice from some of the world's best cooks to deliver more attractive, accessible and safer communities locally.  If possible we hope to publish their recipe and make it widely available to benefit the thousands of communities globally who are hungry for a more walkable place to live".

The City of Sydney and the State Government will jointly manage the process through the Premier's Council for Active Living (PCAL) and calls for papers  are now available on the call for abstracts page on this site.
